Scrabble, Ozzy and Revolutionary Thought

Dave and Viviana came over last night for turkey tacos and Scrabble. Dave and Vivi are our neighbors to the east. Dave is a hometown boy of San Clemente and owns a custom cabinet and finish carpentry business here in town. Vivi works as a human resouces associate with Broadcom, a local giant in the electronics/computer industry. Vivi's home is Chile, mostly from the capitol during the years when her father had little work, then from the lake country near Temuco in the south of Chile. They recently purchased a plot of land in that area to set up Vivi's parents as well as to have a place to enjoy and possibly move to eventually. At some point this spring I will be heading down there to help build the house where the family will reside.

While playing Scrabble (I won with the intermediate score of 139) Dave asked the question, "what song from your childhood caused your first deep emotional reaction?"

This question caused me to really dig b/c music has always been a major cause of feeling in my life. I had to go way back, back to the days at Little Oak Elementary School in Slidell Louisiana. I was six years old, and had very little exposure to music other than the songs at sunday school at the local Mormon church. I was at a friends house, four doors down and well out of earshot of my parents. The song was "Crazy Train", the artist, Mr. Ozzy Osbourne. The emotion the song created was pure fear. I was convinced at that point that I was going to Hell. I waited in vain for the demons to come with gnashing teeth to grab me by the arms and drag me into the earth
to the burning core where I thought at the time Hell was.

After many recitations of songs from Air Supply, Debbie Gibson, the Bangles and Gordon Lightfoot. We decided that the question was an excellent one and worthy of repeat and publish to the blog. So comment away!

After all left and DM went to bed I stayed up to finish War of the Worlds which I had rented earlier in the day. I was further along than I thought, so I decided to look for another show at the conclusion. I stumbled upon some amazing scenery from the border area of Argentina and Chile. Turns out to be The Motocycle Diaries, a movie that Gene Sullivan commented on in Chill Stuff and Co. I decided to watch a bit of it and soon fell to sleep, not b/c the movie was boring.

What the movie did, was make me ask what the fascination about Ernesto was. I have never understood the attraction to a man who in the name of Ideals, murdered many of the people he was either supposed to help or to educate. Ernesto hardly came from a peasant background, and his followers were hardly indigenous farmers. His legacy was destruction and as Gene writes, "a very popular poster."

While I love the lofty ideals of Utopia, where everyone has land to work, healthcare, freedom of thought, religion and it's expression, I know that this so called ideal is not possible for one reason. It goes against human nature. Like it or not we have a self survival instinct, this causes us to think of ourselves and families first. This is the basis for ownership and rights. We would not need them if we did not have this instinct. This natural occurence goes against the grain of Revolutionary Thought b/c it releases control of survival to intellectuals who know how to best distribute resources. The problem with this is that sometimes some animals are more equal than others. To assume that our leaders don't have the instinct we all have is naive and dangerous. You only need to look at the results of the glorious revolution to understand it's absurdity. Blame it if you want on poor US foreign policy, it still does not change the fact that this Utopian Ideal fails well in advance of it's final implementation.

Contemplating the Worlds Greatest Game

Most of you have no idea who this man is. Well truth of the matter he is just a boy of 19. The name is Wayne Rooney and he happens to be the most passionate player in the game today. The Game? Football (the round one, not the swine.) I think if any player holds the ideal of determination and hard work, this one does. He is fantastically talented. His skill is equal to the best of Brazil, but it is his power, speed, tactic and ability to run with the ball straight at the defense that stands out. He plays like he has been in the league for ten years. I can't imagine what he will be like when he is 25 much less 30. This man is the future of world soccer. I have been watching him close since his transfer from Everton to Manchester United.

He along with my other favorite player, Alan Smith transferred after the 2003 season. Smith hailed from rivals Leeds. Both players are firebrands and have enourmous cravings for victory. Smith now looks to be the replacement for the role that Roy Keane left late last week. While the team (MUFC) has been having a bit of adjusting to do from injury of the veteran players absence, they are doing remarkably well all things considered. The average age of the team is low , but they still maintain the high top 3 standard in the Premiership in England.

Since the departure of Keane, the question of who to captain the team is constantly on the mind of fans worldwide. I had not even thought of Rooney as a candidate, but a post on a news site got me thinking. This is a kid who is destined to not only be the captain of the Red Devils, he will also captain England within the next 5 years. I think if the Manager was smart he would get this guy the captains band and let it ride.

The only thing this guy has a problem with is his temper and mouth. This is no different though than Beckham, Keane or Cantona, the best Manchester United have ever had. The responsibility might even make the boy more driven to excellence.

I am posting this, one b/c as I grow older I have found my passion for the game has increased and I wish that the rest of this country would start to figure out that this is where America can truly shine. I love this country, but I hate that the sport I love is a 5th class citizen behind all the other games. I am Proud of US Soccer and the teamwork that dominated all the way thru the semis in Korea(they really outplayed Germany regardless of the scoreboard). If we can get the MLS to work like the teams overseas, the possibilities of an American domination of the sport are very probable. So I am asking, On that rainy saturday next summer, take 90 minutes and watch an uninterupted MLS game and then go buy one of the products advertised on the boards. Give it a chance.

What Matters Most

I got to spend the weekend as Mr Mom b/c Dm was busy with a wedding. I had a great time with the little ones and got to reflect on priorities. Call it my excuse for previous blog issues, but it is hard to spend time on anything else when you are in this stage of life.

And more from Europe

This is just to add flavor to the announcement.

This is a shot from the town Brugges in the north of Belgium. It is one of DM and my favorites in Europe. Kind of stumbled upon the place and now have been there 3 times.

We were thinking after the wedding how cool it would be to have a reunion in Europe with friends. We could pick one town with style and history and we'd all stay in the same hotel and have sips and conversations in an amazing setting. We sort of had this experience at Brady's wedding, so we know that the idea will work, it is just getting a committment to do it.

Let me know if anyone is interested in the long term planning. I will for sure be involved.

And our life just passes us by...

I got a call late from Gern. It made me sad b/c it confirmed the guilt I already feel I neglected those who shaped who I am today. Call it too busy or overcommitted, it is all the same. At least I am getting to have some moments over the years.

It also brings me to another sour memory. One more year of no Telluride. All that adds up to some motiviation to get back into some good habits. I am asking for some help and maybe some negative prodding by people who used to have no problem telling me what to do.

Lets start talking again kids .

These here are pictures of a very happy moment this year. Drinking wine on the Rhine with good friends, and then saying goodbye to the single life of a compatriot.

These were truly good time worthy of a couple of lines in Genor's quote book
