Jimmy Eat World and the Missing Arch Supports

Well DM and I did something last night we have not done in a long time. We went to a real Rock and Roll Show. While the trip started out as a miserable yet typical drive thru Orange and LA Counties, the night finished well by seing a great show. It took us about an hour and 45 minutes to travel 40 miles. Rainy Friday nights are not the time to go and see a show in Los Angeles county coming from San Clemente. Colleen Martin, DM's sister in law, tagged along with us for the ride to hook up with Dawn's brother Chad at the concert.

Another all important question came up at this time. Do you listen to the music of the band you are going to see on the way to the concert? While I have always thought this to be a little cheesy, DM and Colleen said let it be provolone then. We put Futures on the ipod and listened to pass the time suffering the miserable traffic.

The venue was the Glass House in Pamona CA. DM and I had never been up to Pamona before so we were pleasantly surprised when we pulled into the artist district in downtown Pamona. It reminded me a lot of Fayetteville Arkansas with plenty of old non-remodeled buildings that seemed to be stuck in the 50's. We just don't have that stuff behind the Orange Curtain as we have opted to rid ourselves of everything older than 1975. We walked up to the Glass House and got our armbands and went in to check out the opening act. We had no interest in seeing that band so we walked to a nearby bar to have some cold Pabst Blue Ribbon.

Jimmy (as DM put it) went on about 9:45 and opened with drugs or me/for me this is heaven. It was a fantastic opening and really showed what the band is capable of. All of the songs were great, but the standouts other than the opener were futures and kill.

Chad mentioned a classic EMO moment he had with Peter Culp while at a Jimmy Eat World concert with Texas is the Reason: In the middle of the Texas set, the lead singer in emo fashion asked the croud politely to have a seat on the floor so the kids in the back could see the show. So the croud sat indian style quietly for the remainder of the show. I laughed b/c not only is emo huge here, the kids really take it quite too far. I have many times found 16 year old boys with tears in their eyes, reveling their "depression". Wow what a difference 14 years makes in the lives of highschool students.

Toward the end of the show, DM realized that she is just getting old. Due to the venues standing only set up, DM complained that she had brought the wrong shoes. "I need my arch supports for this crap!" We did feel a little out of place anyway being about 10 years older than the average attendee. What can I say, Rock and Roll is the fountain of youth.

I'm glad you found the pleasurable portion of Pomona, I used to live there and the majority of the city is as you described OC or run down and poor and high violence. That being said I enjoyed my youh there, lots of good memories.

Great post, Prather. I couldn't help but grin at the "gettin' old" part. Yeah, I don't get to rock shows like I used to, but then I tend to go more for country music these days anyway. I saw Toby Keith in Houston and sat on the lawn. Very relaxed and fun atmosphere. I saw Dave Matthews Band at the same venue a few years earlier and it was just as mellow, although fewer flag-wavers ;-)

Unless you're a kick-ass rock-n-roll drummer, you will feel old at a rock concert. That said, I haven't been to one in over seven years (Simon and Garfunkel don't count, do they?). But then, no one comes to Florida anyway. I think it sucks here, but who told all the rock stars?
